Think of situations that require you to describe your personality. It might be for a profile on a dating site or introducing yourself on a resume or cover letter. How you present yourself may vary according to your purpose, and the exact words you use might change, but most likely you would consider the qualities, or traits, that you want to highlight about yourself—such as fun-loving and curious or intelligent and dependable. Occasionally you may also reflect on less positive characteristics to know your strengths and weaknesses better. In all these cases, you would likely use a string of personality traits to describe yourself.

Reflecting on your own personality is a valuable exercise, but it’s also valuable to consider how others perceive you. How would your closest friends and family members describe you? Your coworkers? How did they make these determinations and do their descriptions align with your own?

For this Assignment, you compare your own description of your personality with how others describe you. You also reflect on the usefulness of self-knowledge related to personality across different areas of your life.

Review section on personality data in Chapter 2 and the sections on personality judgement and self- knowledge in Chapter 4. Write down three traits you feel are most representative of your personality. Identify at least two people to interview for this Assignment. Ask each person:

To list three traits they believe best describe your personality. (These should describe you, the student, not the interviewees’ personalities.) Consider which is more important in determining behavior, the type of person you are or the situation you’re in?

Use your answers and those of the people you interviewed to inform your positions in this Assignment.

In a 2- to 3-page paper, address the following:

Compare the personality traits you listed to those of your interviewees. Explain what might account for any differences. Explain how personality trait theories might help you understand yourself and your relationships in two specific areas of functioning (e.g., academic, occupational, social, or others). Define expectancy and explain how the behavior of others can change our own. Explain whether you can judge personality by looking at someone. Can you judge reputation by how someone looks? Explain how self-knowledge about personality can be beneficial.

Submit your Assignment.
